Goat Kids Have Arrived!

Cinnamon’s Kids

Saturday evening I was busy grooming Angora’s to take to the Huntington Show on Sunday.  I finished Timberland and took him back out to the barn about 9:00 pm.  But, there was an unexpected sound coming from the goat pen.  Baby goat baa’s!

I quick hustled over to the goat pen to see if my ears had deceived me and there was Cinnamon with two kids already on the ground and cleaned off.  I ran in the house to tell Stan and by the time I grabbed towels and got back to the barn (which wasn’t more then a couple minutes)  Cinnamon was laying down with kid number three half way out.  I pulled the kid, broke the sac and wiped her off.  While Stan hung a second heat lamp, I kept wiping down the kids and helped them to find mom’s teats so they could nurse right away.  All the kids are fine.  Cinnamon is very good mom; very attentive.  We have a black headed buck, a dark red traditional doe and a  lighter brown traditional doe.

Katie’s Kids

While Haley and I were at the rabbit show on Sunday, Stan called to tell me that Katie had just delivered twins.  Katie is our Alpine/Nubian cross dairy goat.  Stan has never had to deal with baby delivery on his own.  When he found the babies, Katie had already gotten them cleaned off and they were struggling to stand.  He got them dried off and helped them to nurse, which can be quite a challenge!  They are cute little stinkers.  Both does.  I will get pictures later today and post.

So, the only goat we have left to kid is Izzy (100% Tog), who we didn’t even realize was pregnant until earlier this week!  We weren’t planning on breeding her until this fall, but apparently Mr. Billy Goat thought she was pretty cute and took care of business earlier then we had planned!  She is 13 months old, so she is old enough, but she is a petite little Tog.  I’m hoping all goes OK for her when her time to deliver comes.  Nellie (Nubian/Tog) didn’t catch, so we are disappointed about that.  Oh, well.  Maybe next year.

Huntington Double Rabbit Show

So, while Stan was playing mid-wife, Haley and I were in Huntington showing Hollands.  After being up until midnight Saturday night taking care of Cinnamon’s kids, I wasn’t up to the challenge of dealing with the Angora’s at the show.  So, they all stayed home.

We did really well in both shows, which is great because there were several other very good breeders there, that I thought could easily sweep the tables.

In Show A, White River’s Arden won BOB and GBF’s Tahlia took BOSV (both solids).  That was Arden’s 3rd leg, so he Granded with a big win.   I have really been liking Tahlia (ELS Elden x ELS Tallie) and was so thrilled that the judge (Bruce Ormsby) thought she was nice also.  By the way, I think Bruce is an awesome Holland judge.  He is always so patient with them and really works with the rabbit to get them to pose their best.

In Show B, GBF’s Oscar won the SJB class and GBF’s Talora (Tahlia’s littermate sister) won the SJD class.  I was getting really tired by this point in the day, and totally forgot to put Tahlia on the table!  How intelligent is that?! Talora was then chosen as BOSV.   I only had two brokens to show (both juniors), GBF’s Avery and GBF’s Topeka (a littermate sister to Tahlia & Talora).  Well, Avery won the BJB class and Topeka was the BJD class.  Topeka then won BOV for the brokens!!  But, she wasn’t done.  She went on to win BOS.  I couldn’t be more thrilled.  It just occurred to me as I was re-reading this, that we won all four of the junior classes in this show.  Wow.

If you didn’t follow all of that…. GBF’s Tahlia, Talora and Topeka are all littermate sisters (Tobias is their littermate brother who is also spectacular but has a broken toe and can’t be shown).  They ALL won their classes and better.  Tahlia – BOSV, Talora, BOSV, and Topeka BOS! How is that for a consistent litter?!  Needless to say, I have repeated that breeding.  🙂  I wonder how Tahlia would have done in the 2nd show had I not forgot to put her on the table?!

Also of note, my little black buck, GBF’s Indy (GBF’s Indigo x GBF’s Hope) had very good promising comments from both judges.  He is only 3 months old but very cute already – he has a really nice head, ear and crown placement.  GBF’s Teddie Bear also got promising comments from both judges.  She is also very young.  So, I’m anxious to see how they look in another month or so.

So all told, we brought home 6 legs.  It was a very good day!  Here are some pix of the rabbits I took while at the show:
